Yes. SHA-256 is widely used and considered secure for integrity checks. SHA-1 is broken for security purposes and only included for compatibility.
The browser's Web Crypto API does not provide MD5, and MD5 is insecure for anything security related. Use SHA-256 instead.
No. Passwords should be hashed on the server with a slow salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2, not a plain SHA hash.
